An exhibition that reflects upon the rich Roman history of the city of Heerlen, placed in the Thermenmuseum - to stimulate visitors to see the city’s history not only within the museum, but throughout the city as well - is created by Chapters in the ‘Expoditie Euregio’.
In the near future, Thermenmuseum Heerlen will close its doors for a full reconstruction of the site. To keep the memory of the Roman Empire in Heerlen alive during their closure, Thermenmuseum asked Chapters as their communication partner to create an exhibition that would visualise the Roman heritage of Heerlen throughout the city and beyond.
Visualising the vast richness of the Roman Empire within the region is the strategy we have set out for Thermenmuseum Heerlen. How do we make this Roman heritage visible for visitors of the museum? By creating an exhibition that is more of an ‘expodition’ - a collision of the words ‘exhibition’ and ‘expedition’. The ‘Expodition Euregio’ takes visitors on a Roman tour through the region that highlights the Roman history - a reflection on the heritage that is all around.
Letting the residents of the region fall in love with their Roman history is the focal point in the creation of the concept. When do you fall more in love, than when visiting a city when on holiday?
We are taking the visitors on a trip to make them fall in love with the region all over again. We are taking them on a trip 2000 years back in time, to Coriovallum. The Roman Empire that is now called Heerlen. The entire concept is based on the concept of taking a city trip, with little ‘islands’ throughout the ‘expodition’ where you can learn about different aspects of the local culture.
The program for the exhibition is designed as an organised city tour, emphasising on the food, the landscape, the city, the people, the countryside, the architecture, and the cultural aspects of Coriovallum, such as local celebrities, gods, and gravesites.
Within the ‘expodition’, a projection of a tour guide can be called upon at each individual island, who will take you on a guided tour to explore the region.
A wall with Roman activities, locations, and sights ends the ‘expodition’. Scan the code on the wall and transport the information into your telephone to use this as a tour guide outside of the museum - taking the ‘expodition’ into the region.
Chapters created and produced the entire ‘Expodition Euregio’ in collaboration with Thermenmuseum and Historisch Goud.
